Festival of Flowers

This past weekend was the lovely Festival of Flowers hosted by Springfield Museums. So wonderful to see the floral perspectives of the other participants, equally so to be among the art. Last year, I became so enchanted by the Laocoön and His Sons plaster cast, that I was particularly driven to interpret this great, intimidating piece this season.

Artist statement:

”In this living sculptural interpretation of Laocoön and His Sons, body and form are conveyed using robust blooms, such as the Orchid and Hydrangea. The Rose offers complexity of the human condition. Just as this art is bound in plaster, the flowers too are restrained in structure—the cement represents strength, foundation provided by the parent, while the glass represents the fragility of childhood. The serpentine and verdant vine, woven and connecting the elements, invites reflection on the cyclical nature of suffering that we keep alive.”
